How to read the population data
Population size, changes in population and changes in households answer different questions.
The national population in the 2025 data is 51,117,378 people, a difference of -99,843 people from the preceding annual observation. Read this change alongside, but separately from, the household trend.
Who is counted?
This page uses population by sex and household counts from KOSIS resident registration statistics. Its coverage may differ from the population census and other statistics that include foreign residents. Annual observations refer to the end of the year, not the average population during that year.
Compare size and change
The annual change is the latest annual population minus the preceding annual population. Region cards are ordered by the latest population size, so the first region is not necessarily the fastest growing. Compare changes over the same period alongside the population base.
Births, deaths and migration all contribute to population changes. A total-population chart alone cannot establish why a population declined or measure the effect of a particular policy.
Fewer people can still mean more households
People per household is total population divided by registered households. Looking at whether population and household counts move in opposite directions can reveal changes in household size. This average is not the most common household size and is not necessarily comparable to a census household measure.
The sex ratio counts males per 100 females. A value above 100 means more males; a value below 100 means more females.
Cautions for long-term comparisons
New regions, mergers and boundary changes affect regional time series. Check the administrative boundaries in the source when a value changes sharply. Revisions and collection timing may also cause the latest values here to differ from the original table.
